The purpose
of this course is to workshop the relationship between page-based
and sound-based text. We will be looking at one specific example
of this relationship, through the performative utterances of
Black women poetically and in some cases, musically. The interpretation
of some of these sounds involve sensuality and this consideration
gives us insight into how different vocal modes, sounds and tones
are understood by the listener and reader. This dovetails into
assumptions about the individual speakers’ voices as well
as typifications of groups. In addition to the syllabus below,
I will be adding materials as needed at my discretion.
The course will emphasize student workshopping with some readings
and listening sessions from the professor’s private collection.
Students will be encouraged to present their own work and each
student will also be required to give a graduate-level presentation
of their own research-based topic from class discussion. In addition
to the presentation before the class each student will be required
to hand in a final 16 page poetry collection as well as perform
a live reading or recording on CD.
